You asked for it and we listened (finally!): We've extended our hours! From now on, we are open Mon-Sat from 7am to 7pm and on Sunday from 8am to 5pm. This is our first week with the new hours so please come in and keep the late crew company! They've been a little lonely...
Circle the Square starts up next month on June 20! Every third Thursday of the month from 3pm to 7pm, Medford Square will be bustling with performances, crafts for kids, special dining opportunities, participatory activities, and an all-round fun night out on the town. Produced by CACHE in Medford, Circle the Square is entering its 2nd season of presenting artful and entertaining activities in Medford Square from June to October. Mystic Coffee Roaster is proud to be a partner with Circle the Square!
On a related note: Are there any musicians out there looking for a small venue to perform? We are hoping to produce an event or events for Circle the Square right here in the cafe. We are looking for acoustic musicians who are able to perform here on any 3rd Thursday of the month from June to October between the hours of 3pm & 7pm. If you are interested, contact Sharon at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We've had a really busy month so far and now it's almost over! The SCAA Event was great! Got about 225 pounds of coffee roasted for their Cupping Workshops. Phew.... And Bryan and I got to cup some very nice Ethiopian coffees from Boot Coffee / Ethiopian Fine Coffees, which was very interesting not to mention tasty! It was nice to see and meet some folks that normally I only email or talk to on the phone: Our suppliers at Cafe Imports and Invalsa Coffee, and the guys at US Roasters. And got some good information from potential new suppliers and the folks at FairTrade. And stay tuned for some new smoothie flavors which I got to try. Perhaps Butternut Squash & Mango (really, it is GOOD!) or Carrot-Orange... Or both!
But what about the COFFEE??? Well we've been trying out some new ones lately: Mexican Chiapas and Burundi. The Mexican does well at a lighter roast with a nice tangy twist. And the Burundi seems to like a medium-dark roast with a full-bodied, earthy spiciness. Try them next time you see them here as the coffee of the day!
I got the planters on Riverside Ave planted with pansies and petunias! Finally it is Spring! Love the flowers!
Wow! It's official now: We are the Roast Host for the SCAA Symposium & Expo in Boston this April! We'll be roasting for the cupping workshops! The SCAA is the Specialty Coffee Association of America. This is very exciting! We'll be roasting something over 200 lbs for the cupping sessions. Coffee Cupping is something like wine tasting, only it's coffee, of course... We cup coffee to determine the characteristics of different coffees: fragrance, aroma, flavor, acidity, mouthfeel/texture and aftertaste. The SCAA Symposium & Expo will be Aril 10th thru 14th. If you are a coffee professional in the Boston area, this is THE event for you! Check it out: http://www.scaaevent.org/
I came back from a shopping trip today to find Bryan dealing with a nice rush of customers so I jumped in to help, in between dragging cases of paper cups and cream cheese & such from the car into the shop. In the middle of this, a nice lady introduced herself and handed me a bag full of pastries, saying she'd been wanting to meet me & hoped we'd try her wares. Not one to pass up free pastries, I thanked her profusely (we've been needing a new baker for months now!) and said I'd be in touch. After getting through the line of customers and packing away the shopping items, we tried some scones, muffins & cake. Wow! It was delicious! Turns out the nice lady was Renée McLeod, of Petsi Pies. I called her back right away and placed an order for tomorrow! Yay! Finally, scones, muffins, cupcakes! We'll try some pies over the weekend. She's got some really yummy pies both sweet and savory. Can't wait!
Happy 2013 everyone! I hope all is well with you and your family! We're starting off the year with a new blend of Vietnamese beans, which caused quite a stir yesterday when we served it for the first time. We've blended the Vietnam Excelsa, Dalat Arabica and a smidge of Peaberry Robusta for a great kick in the cup! If you like the Dalat and Excelsa, you'll love this blend. Similar to our Sumatra bean but a with more intense earthiness and peppery/cinnamon spice to it. We love it!
We also have a new artist in the house: Evmorphia Stratis. Hailing from Everett, her work is big and bold, like our coffee, with nice, saturated colors to help us cope with the winter doldrums. Check out her post and press release on our Facebook page.
Where did July go??? So now that we're just about done with the 1st week of Aug I'd say it's about time for an update! Circle The Square is the big news in Medford Square this summer. Held on the 3rd Thursday of July thru October, CTS is interactive events all around the Square featuring arts, performances, demonstrations, crafts and all kinds of fun for the whole family. The July CTS was a rousing success and we look forward to the next one on Aug 16. Here at Mystic Coffee Roaster, we will be sampling several coffees and we will do a roasting demonstration, open to all. Hopefully in Sept or Oct we will host some music in the shop. Updates forthcoming!
Farmer's Market season is underway again! We are pleased to participate in the Medford Farmer's Market for our 3rd season and our second season with theWoburn Farmer's Market at Spence Farm. The Medford Market has a new location this year, behind City Hall on a nice patch of grass next to City Hall Mall on Riverside Ave. We are enjoying the grass and the trees! The Woburn Farmer's Market at Spence Farm, run by the Woburn Agricultural Commission, gets a big congratulations for winning an orchard from Edy's Communities Take Root program! We saw the trees at the market yesterday, newly planted. Lovely!
And new this year, Mystic Coffee is now available at Farmer Dave's CSA! They are currently offering our Mystic Blend and Guatemalan whole bean and ground coffees. Farmer Dave's is at more than a dozen Farmers’ Markets in eastern Massachusetts. Check out their locations here!
You may know that our coffee beans are available in some local markets, but did you know that some restaurants are serving Mystic Coffee too? The latest is Carroll's Bar & Grill right in Medford Square! Carroll's is brand new and providing a much needed meeting and dining spot in The Square. We wish them all the best! And we love their coffee!
Also our dear friends at Bistro 5 in West Medford, who were of course early adopters of our Espresso Blend, Mystic Blend and South American Decaf Blend! They have opened a sister restaurant in the last year in Winchester called A Tavola. Both restaurants have a delightful atmosphere, fabulous menus and great coffee!
And in Melrose, Coffee Tea and Me not only sells some of our beans but serves our Sumatra, Ethiopian Sidamo and other specialty beans. We love their shop and their baristas are great!
Medford Chamber of Commerce sponsored Medford's Best Coffee "And"... on Sunday, Oct 17 at St Joseph's School. We're happy to report that Mystic Coffee Roaster was voted Medford's Best Coffee by attendees of the event! Businesses participating were asked to bring coffee and a breakfast item, with separate votes for coffee and food. We got rave reviews for our sticky buns but Magnificent Muffin won the "And" vote for their delicious muffins. We're proud to serve Medford's Best Coffee! Thanks so much to everyone who voted and thanks to the Chamber for sponsoring the event!
The Speaking Clock Review, presented by T-Bone Burnett played at the Wang in Boston last Saturday featuring Elvis Costello, Elton John, Jeff Bridges, John Mellencamp, Neko Case and many others. But for a couple of days before the show, Medford's own Chevalier Theater hosted the rehearsal for many of the artists. Mystic Coffee Roaster was called upon to provide coffee and pastries for Thursday's rehearsal! While we were not able to stay to serve it up to the stars, Elvis Costello was spotted when we broke down the coffee set-up and we're told Jeff Bridges probably had our coffee. There's a quick blurb about the rehearsal in Wickedlocal.com/Medford.
